Video Report: Gold, Impunity and Violence in Cabañas, El Salvador

Violence has intensified in northeastern El Salvador, as a number of high profile activists in the struggle against the Pacific Rim Mining Company have suffered attacks and threats. The most serious case to date is that of Marcelo Rivera, whose body was found in a well on July 2, after he had gone missing for 12 days. Last week, Ramiro Rivera, no relation to Marcelo, was shot eight times in the back and legs while he was in a field tending some cattle. Human rights activists in El Salvador and abroad have called on the Funes Administration to act decisively to end the violence against anti-mining activists.
