Haiti’s election was marred with scuffles, stampedes, murders and confusion in what the U.S. ambassador has called a "triumph for the Haitian people."

Many polling places were disorganized and unable to open on time.

"Some polling workers didn't show up for work, so we're going to grab people from the crowd, give them some quick training and get them in there," said U.N. spokesman David Wimhurst.

To make matters worse, many of the presidential candidates have dark pasts:

The leader of a bloody rebellion that toppled the last democratically elected government, a weapons dealer, an army chief and an accused killer linked to the Duvalier dictatorship are among the people.

"If the world is upside down the way it is now, wouldn't we have to turn it over to get it to stand up straight?" -Eduardo Galeano
