Support Upside Down World!

Since August 2003, Upside Down World has been uncovering activism and politics in Latin America. We have collaborated to produce news and analysis you cannot find anywhere else. Click here to read more about our work.

Making the news at Upside Down World takes hours and hours of on the ground investigating, interviewing, fact checking, translating, researching and editing, not to mention the time-consuming technical work of running a website.

We depend on you, our readers, as our only source of funding. No ads, no corporate sponsors – we only answer to our readers.

In November 2005, we asked for your monetary support, promising we would use the funding to expand our coverage and web facilities. We have done this. Thanks to you we’ve been able to pay writers something for their work, purchase new software and upgrade the website, triple the amount of articles we produce, and increase our geographical presence. We’re now asking for your help again to keep on moving in this direction. Without your help, we will have to shut down.

As many Upside Down World readers know, there is reason for hope in Latin America as more progressive government are elected into office and social movements gain a stronger voice in the political realm. For many Latin Americans, this leftist shift means less poverty, better political representation and an end to repressive governments. None the less, the GW Bush administration and transnational corporations are working to put this shift in check. One of Imperialism’s favorite tools is misinformation through the media, which often facilitates military intervention and corporate exploitation. At Upside Down World we’re working to counter that misinformation campaign.

As we have for nearly three years, Upside Down World will continue reporting from the streets and government palaces, uncovering stories that many corporate media do not report on. In 2006, more elections will be taking place throughout the region, and our reporters are ready to write – but as anyone in the profession knows, you can’t eat words.

For specialists and general readers alike, its contribution is essential." – Laura Carlsen, The Director of the IRC Americas Program (Americaspolicy.org) in Mexico City.

"UpsideDownWorld.org – an exceptional and indespensable source of independent media on critical issues facing Latin America. “As I near my sixtieth birthday if often strikes me that in many ways the political situation has never been bleaker in the United States during my lifetime. On the other hand, during my lifetime the political situation in Latin America has never been more promising than it is today. Informing the world about the struggles and successes of social movements and progressive governments in Latin America is terribly important, and nobody does it better than Upside Down World. It is crucial for US activists to be well informed about the activities of the US government and US corporations in Latin America so we can act effectively to expose and stop their interventionist crimes and exploitative practices. But it is also important for beleaguered activists in the United States to know about important victories activists can achieve when we stick to our principles and never stop organizing. Successes in Latin America can help "keep hope alive" during difficult times in the US.” Robin Hahnel, Author, most recently: Economic Justice and Democracy: From Competition to Cooperation (Routledge, 2005)

“Upside Down World is an indispensable English-language resource for in-depth news and views on the resource wars, popular movements, human rights and ecological struggles from Latin America…This important project demands our attention and our support.”
Bill Weinberg, Editor, World War 4 Report (http://ww4report.com)
Author, Homage to Chiapas: The New Indigenous Struggles in Mexico (Verso, 2000)
