Two proposed World Bank financed pulp mills in Uruguay have been put on hold, but are expected to be approved within the next two months.
The governor of the province across from the mills has questioned the validity of the projects’ environmental impact report that states the pollution from the mills would be minimal.
“If necessary we’ll go all the way to the International Court of Justice in The Hague”, said Governor Eduardo Busti.
The Argentine government is also worried about the potentially harmful environmental impacts from the projects.
The International Finance Corporation said it will accept public comment on the projects for a minimum of 60 days before deciding on financing for the project.
